Skill Up Safety

Are You Making the Most of Your Fire Drills?

A fire drill is an opportunity to check how the evacuation arrangements work in practice.

Look beyond the time on the clock

Observe whether staff recognise the alarm, use appropriate routes and understand the assembly arrangements. Consider how visitors and people needing assistance are included in the plan.

Plan a safe exercise

Agree the exercise with the people responsible for fire safety. Do not create real obstructions or unsafe conditions to make a drill feel realistic. Follow the site’s arrangements for monitoring and ending the exercise.

Record what needs to improve

Ask staff what was unclear, record observations and assign follow-up actions. Review the training or arrangements where the drill identifies a gap.

Connect training to your building

Our on-site Fire Warden training provides opportunities to discuss local arrangements, practical examples and questions from the people involved.
